Apprenticeship and level: Quantity surveying and commercial management (Degree)

Employer: Interserve Construction

Training provider: Nottingham Trent University

I have always been fascinated in construction since I can remember. I was always extremely interested in learning how buildings were made, from the design stage throughout to construction. Following my personal interest I studied the construction industry extensively to find out more information. Quantity surveying immediately stood out at me and I instantly thought that it was a role that I would like to delve into more, so I arranged to do some work experience. I did work experience at MDA consulting and Balfour Beatty, I really enjoyed both of these experiences and found that it was very beneficial experiencing construction commercial elements with a quantity surveyor at a main contractor and also a PQS with a consultant. After completing my work experience placements I believed that this position would best fit my unique combination of skills and interests.

I am currently employed by Interserve Construction as a trainee quantity surveyor and I completed a two year apprenticeship as a construction technical apprentice around two years ago. I am currently studying a quantity surveying and commercial management degree level apprenticeship at Nottingham Trent university on a day release basis. I have benefited enormously from my apprenticeship, with the new skills I have learnt and the skills I am just developing not only professionally but also personally. I have learnt to communicate on many levels whether that be written, verbal or standing in front of an audience delivering a presentation. I have learnt to adopt my communication skills to suit the audience from clients to managing directors to sub-contractors and children in hospital as well as my everyday life. Without having the exposure and guidance that I have been fortunate to have experienced through my apprenticeship I very much doubt my personal development would have been so significant.
